Habs still talking to Weaver, no offer has been made yet

According to Richard Labbe of La Presse and Jimmy Murphy of XN Sports the Montreal Canadiens have yet to make a formal offer to UFA defenseman Mike Weaver. The two sides are still talking but nothing is close at this point, as July 1st approaches the Habs don’t seem to be in a hurry to get the 36 year-old veteran under contract.

“Mike has not abandoned the idea of returning with the Canadiens, but it will now analyze all options available to him,” said agent Jerome Buckley in a telephone interview with La Presse.

“Hearing through my sources that Habs & Mike Weaver still talking but as Richard Labbe reported no offer made to this point.”

With the new CBA rule kicking in today, where teams are allowed to approach and interview potential future UFA’s. According to Jimmy Murphy Weaver has been talking to other teams as well as the Habs at this time and the Habs remain at the top of his list.

“Those same sources tell me that Mike Weaver is already in communication with other NHL clubs as well but Habs still remain high on list.”

Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports that Mike Weaver could be asking for too much than the Canadiens are willing to give.

“From the outside, my understanding of Mike Weaver situation is he’s asking for more $ than the Habs are willing to pay.”
