Report: Wesie for Diaz may have been the best offer

According to a source the Montreal Canadiens contract negotiations with Raphael Diaz started to head south when Diaz commanded a 3-4 year deal in which the Canadiens were not interested. The source suggests Diaz was also looking for something around $2.75 – $3.5 million per season on a 3-4 year contract.

GM Marc Bergevin decided to take some calls and shop around the Swiss defenseman around the league and based on a couple of factors landed Dale Weise. One of the factors believed to be enticing to the Habs was that Weise is to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season and not a unrestricted free agent, like other offers may have involved.

The New York Rangers were among the teams interested in Diaz, who later did acquire him from Vancouver for a draft pick, although were only willing to part with a mid to low draft pick and not a depth forward.

The source suggests Bergevin valued Diaz as a 3rd round draft pick or a forward equivalent (bottom six).
