Bourque is on the trading block, surprise!

Pierre LeBrun of ESPN and TSN has stated that a source told him that GM Marc Bergevin is willing to part with Rene Bourque. This doesn’t come as a surprise to many as it was already known that Bourque’s name has come up in trade talks and that Bergevin was willing to move him along with others, but LeBrun just adds the extra confirmation.

Bourque, 32, has racked up an astounding 8 points (7 goals, 1 assist) in 37 games this season with the Habs and has been a healthy scratch a couple of times already. Bourque also has 2 more years remaining on his 6 year $20 million dollar contract after this season that will pay him $2.5 million but carries a $3.333 million cap hit.

It will definitely be tough for Bergevin to move Bourque at this point in time but he could still be moved to a team that may have trouble hitting the cap floor next season. On the flip side though if Bourque does improve his play elsewhere his actually salary of $2.5 million may look pretty good for a 3rd line forward who has scored 20+ goals in 3 straight seasons.

Here is the cost of a buyout if the Canadiens were to buy him out after this season as per capgeek.com,

2014-15: $1,666,667
2015-16: $1,666,667
2016-17: $833,333
2017-18: $833,333

I believe Bourque could be moved for a mid to low draft pick possibly a 4th/5th round pick, which would open more room for youngsters like Michael Bournival and Louis Leblanc to gain more ice time or acquire another bottom six forward at the deadline.
