Hawks Were Interested In Bourque

The Chicago Blackhawks were apparently looking at Rene Bourque a couple of weeks ago before acquiring Kris Versteeg from Florida.  This is according to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

Before acquiring RW Kris Versteeg from Florida, Hawks GM Stan Bowman studied the possibility of dealing for RW Rene Bourque from the Canadiens.

He also hinted that GM Marc Bergevin wants to do ‘something big’, I don’t think the word big is used in the right context here when thinking of moving a guy like Bourque. Maybe moving your captain that is a UFA at season’s end is big, but I don’t think Gionta is going anywhere soon unless the Habs fall off the rails and are sellers at trade deadline.

From the Canadiens stand point having youngster Michael Borunival playing up and down the lineup is a nice luxury and with his recent surprising play he could ultimately make Bourque expandable.

As it stands right now Bourque’s play is sub par and is virtually not very appealing to many teams looking for offensive help. Especially since he carries a $3.333m cap hit for the next 2 years after this season, plus he holds a Modified No Trade Clause.
